This is a little history of how and why this race started. John and Joe Hoffman were born in 1955 to John and Maria Hoffman in Baltimore Maryland. John Sr. was a pigeon flyer. So they were hooked on pigeons at a very early age. John and Joe started flying pigeons in 1967. They joined the Pigeon Fanciers Social Club and the Dundalk Pigeon Club. They flew under the name of Twin Loft. They flew together for 40 years, without missing a race series. How many people can say that.
Well in 2007 that all ended with the murder of Joseph. Joe was asleep in his house when 2 neighberhood kids broke into his house to steal money. They did more than that. This was a senseless killing over 3 dollars. The biggest problem of all was all they had to do was ask him to borrow money and he would have lent it to them. That was the kind of person Joe was.
John is always thinking of his brother, the hardest time is on race day. This is a true story that happened on the 560 mile race in 2009. While he was sitting there at about 8:20 pm and still no pigeons, he says to himself come Joey bring me one home. At 8:26 one came over the roof top of the house and hit the landing board and ran in so quick that John could not tell what it was. At first he thought that someone was playing a trick on him by letting out a bird he lost in previous weeks. Sure enough John ran back to the loft and it was a race bird. On long races the Race Sec. will call to see if any body has any birds home. At about 8:30 the phone rang and the race sec. told John that nobody has any, well to John's delight, he said I have one. The only day bird.
The idea of a one loft race came about after John entried three of them this year for first time. He had pigeons in the Charm city Challenge,Vegasrace.us and the Rockymountainoneloftrace. After he found out that the Charm City Challenge was not going to happen in 2010, He said I will have one in Joe's name. So he started building a new loft right in Joe,s back yard which he bought after his death.
